Marionettes have been real busy in the studio over the last few months and on the 9th April we will be releasing a 3 track EP called “The Rightness of Blindness”. Until then though, we have a spiffing wee free download that we recorded on Tuesday afternoon then mixed in a couple of hours on Saturday Morning. check it out below or download it here

We are jumping in the van in April and having a bit of a jolly around Scotland to promote this, here are the dates:

Thursday 12th April, The Doghouse Dundee. Doors at 8pm. £5/£3 for students. 14+, Under 18′s must be accompanied by an adult.
Friday 13th April, The Lemon Tree Aberdeen, support from Velvet Audio, Kobi and Joy Riot. Tickets are £6 + booking fee. Doors at 8pm. Under 16′s must be accompanied by an adult.
Saturday 14th April, Pivo Pivo, Glasgow. Doors at 7.30pm 18+ only.
Sunday 15th April, Sneaky Petes, Edinburgh, support from Suburban Saints and The Battle Adds, Tickets are £4. Doors at 7pm. 18+ only
Monday 16th April, Madhatters Inverness. More info to come on this one - See you down the front !!!!

IRL – Prometheus Single Out Today!

The release of “Prometheus” so soon after the release of the bands debut album, “Empty Your Lungs And Breathe”, shows a band not willing to rest on their laurels and full of creativity. In the case of “Prometheus” IndianRedLopez have created a track which strongly hints at a new direction for their music while keeping just enough in the mix of what made them special already. Don’t just take our word for it, check out these early reviews from Rave Child and The Leftover Sessions who also keenly believe that “Prometheus” and IRL are something special indeed!

IRL celebrate Prometheus release at Bedford Records Xmas Party

Following on from our sold out Xmas Party last December, we have chosen a selection of our artists to perform together to form another fantastic night of original music this coming December. This years Bedford Records Xmas Party will take place at The Lemon Tree in Aberdeen on Friday the 16th December.

The event will showcase an eclectic mix of the labels bands and include a live set from popular electronic indie band IndianRedLopez, who are launching their new single at the event, as well as a welcome return to the Lemon Tree for Americana style rockers The Deportees.

Alongside the aforementioned bands, local rockers Velvet Audio and distinguished songwriters Stanley will perform at the event. Opening the night will be Bedford Records signings The Maydays who will be making their first trip to Aberdeen following on the back of a successful UK Tour.

The event will kick off at 8pm and tickets are available from One Up Records (In Person) and online

IndianRedLopez hit the road with Prometheus

No – not the forthcoming Ridley Scott shityerpants blockbuster movie Prometheus, this is the mighty IndianRedLopez single that is just about to hit the pressing plant. We’ve been working on this release for a few months now, finely crafting it’s many layers into something that has surprised us all! It was recorded in a very unorthodox manner; from the shitty PA system pre-amps that we tracked the drums through in the IRL biscuitbunker to the way we layered each drum part due to us only having four channels available to record through. Eventually though, we ended up with a mind-boggling 140+ audio tracks to try and arrange into what you’ll eventually hear on the CD, which will be available at the following shows on the IRL winter tour then released on general sale on 5th December.

Q + A with Maydays:

It’s fair to say that recent Bedford signings Maydays have had a busy 2011 but they have had a particularly busy Summer with live dates all over the UK and recording a single with Bedford Records in the Scottish countryside. We thought we’d grab them for a quick “Q + A” to find about a bit more about what goes on behind the scenes in the Maydays camp and also see what they have in store for the near future.

Can you describe your sound in 3 words?

Probably not. We struggled for a longtime to describe it in a paragraph.

Who would you say are your collective influences when writing or in the studio?

Most of us love The Band and are very influenced by the them in certain ways but its not very apparent in our music. Maybe bands like The Strokes &The Walkmen are more prominent but rather than set out to sound a certain way together its more a case of individual influences that just happen to create the sound and style we have. And those influences can change depending on what each of us are listening to.

You recently did a UK tour which took you down to London and back – what were the highlights?

Club Fandango in London was class. The Buffalo Bar is nice and small and it was suitable busy. Edinburgh was also great. The Wee Red Bar has a great vibe and the remainder of the night was great catching up with friends. As was Glasgow.

Last Friday you performed at King Tuts which is a pretty special venue in music circles- does your set change for big shows like that?

The usual rules apply – in and out. It’ll be a short 6 (7 at a push) song set. The idea is that you still remember the first song by the time we’ve played you our last.

Has there been a standout moment in the band along the way which has really inspired or encouraged the band?

Probably the Scottish Parliament gig back in July. It brought attention to us and set the ball rolling. Before that it was seeming like it might be quite hard to get people to listen. So yea, that or the Pete and The Pirates support slot from which the organizers for that gig seen us and invited us to play.

Outside of music, what do you guys do in your downtime?

Work unfortunately. We consist of a Yard Assistant, a brewer, a postman, an ocean scientist, a sometimes pipe weld examiners mate and a customary student. Little time for anything else once you subtract the hours of travelling we do to make the band work.

Its currently Freshers Week – the time of year where a lot of people are starting University for the first time and moving away from home. What would your advice be to any wet behind the ears freshers?

Loans are there to be blown but the trick is to be wise as to how you blow it. See bands, that’s top of the list. Find a good kebab shop and stick to it. Always keep enough money for a public transport journey home. Try to phone your mother once a week…it’ll make her happy.

What is on the agenda for Maydays for the rest 2011?

Writing. And lots of it. Maybe a release of some description before the years out. And gigs whenever possible.

It’s been pretty busy here at Bedford Towers over the summer. Apart from getting Indie Pop Scots The Maydays Single “By Apointment To..” released we have been busy in the studio with local electro indie sensations IndianRedLopez. We have been recording a song called Prometheus which is sounding pretty flippin’ huge so far! It’s a synth-heavy grinder that will be equally at home on the stereo at home or on a bigger system in a club – It’s just about finished and the boys will be touring to support this release throughout November & December, not to mention a European Tour in January 2012. Here’s some pics from the recording process…

Bedford Records, Iain & Steven in Award Nomination Shocker!

We are really proud to say that its awards time in the Bedford Records camp this week as we are nominated in four categories in the Scottish New Music Awards. The event takes place this weekend in Glasgow and is already sold out so we are dusting off the tux’s and practising our speeches (not really). The Scottish New Music Awards has a hefty list of awards which cover categories in all parts of the Music Industry with Broadcasters, Record Labels, Teachers, Bloggers and Bookers (find a full list here) all nominated by their peers.

Steven Milne’s (pictured above) “Chasing Phantoms” LP is up for Best Alternative/ Indie Recording while Bedford Head Honcho Iain Macpherson is up for both Sound Engineer + Producer of the year. Finally, to cap it all off Bedford Records has been nominated for Best Label which we are all pretty surprised about!
